Game Informer names Top 200 Games of All Time. Fanboys complain.
Game Informer just celebrated its 200th issue. Yay for surviving! So, just like with issue 100 (except now with more!), they compiled a list of the “Top 200 Games of All Time.” And, just like 100 issues ago, the original Legend of Zelda took top honors. Eh. Check this list out; did yours make it? My favorite is number 30, “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivious.” HA! Just like the transcriber.

Eh. These are no surprise; all-time lists are generally the most popular games that innovated their genre. And, there’s nothing wrong with that; why shouldn’t something earn its right as a best game of all time for being at the cutting edge of their genres?
The only one on here that really baffled me was Tactics Ogre. wtf, that game wasn’t even popular. I guess it is true that it was probably the most innovative TRPG of all time when it came out…but it also kind of sucked and was grindey as hell.

Lists like these are fucking stupid and the only reason for sites and magazine publications to keep doing them is for more readers and increased traffic. It doesn’t matter how much effort is invested into them and how much the panel of judges scrutinizes each game which is nominated, it’s pointless in the end because the list doesn’t actually mean ANYTHING.
How do you define best game ever, or top game of all time? Everyone seems to have their own definitions of the subject, and it seems that almost everyone will change their personal list of top games around in a few years’ time anyway, despite the fact that a lot of the changes to a list will not have been from new top titles being released, rather, a change in preference over time.
Some people will look at these lists with a “my favourite games which have still held up for me over time” mentality. Others will also look at the list with a marketing point of view and think about overall game sales, and some will think about which games were most important in pushing the industry forward as a whole. All of these criteria are subjective so it’s stupid that they be put into an objective list like this. Game Informer isn’t labeling this as “Our Top 200 FAVOURITE Games of All Time” or “Our Top 200 Games that shaped Gaming” – it’s just top 200 games, as if it’s a fact that can’t be disagreed with.
I’d love to put out lists like these of my own someday just to get a bit of free publicity, but in the end I’d be pleasing nobody. Pointless.

I enjoyed Tactics Ogre. I don’t think Infamous belongs here at all. Oh, it’s nice to see some Black Isle love with Planescape: Torment and Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn. They spread the love around. I can dig it.

I’m a huge Final Fantasy fan, but putting Final Fantasy X on this list at all (i just browsed through) doesn’t make sense at all. To each his own in what he or she enjoys I guess.

After looking over the list, I could nitpick every game basically. But one that really bothers me is Super Metroid. Seriously? Number 21? I know the original was ground breaking, but SM is leagues better than its NES predecessor.
And Crackdown made it on the list. Are you fucking kidding me?
